1316882 Olefin co-dimerisation catalysts comprising rhodium E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 26 March 1970 [1 April 1969] 14900/70 Heading BIE [Also in Division C5] A rhodium-containing catalyst for use in the preparation of a 1,4-diene from an alphamono-olefin and a conjugated diene, or a rhodium-containing precursor of such catalyst, is contacted with a specified amount of an "active" organic chloride or bromide, such contacting being effected either to prepare catalyst from a monovalent rhodium compound and/or to preserve the activity of catalyst (for example catalyst which has been prepared initially from a monovalent rhodium compound by such contacting) during such use or to reactivate catalyst which has become deactivated through such use and which may have been prepared initially from a trivalent rhodium compound. An organic chloride or bromide as such may be used; alternatively, an "active" organic chloride may be provided in situ by reaction between gaseous chlorine and either the conjugated diene or polyene derived from the reaction between the alpha-monoolefin and the conjugated diene. Numerous examples of monovalent and trivalent rhodium compounds from which the catalyst may be prepared, and of organic chlorides and bromides, are given in the Specification. The catalyst may be used in the presence of a solvent; specifiied solvents are hexane, cyclohexane, decalin, benzene, toluene, tetrachloroethylene, methylene chloride, chlorobenzene, methanol, tetrahydrofuran, dimethyl ether, diethylene glycol and ethoxytriethylene glycol. As exemplified, the catalyst may be used in the presence of a specified amide, phosphoramide or phosphine oxide. |
