A rocket and booster are launched by moving them by electrical power on a carriage supported on a track by magnetic levitation. Most of the track is within an evacuated tube. When the carriage nears exit doors the booster is fired and when outside the doors the rocket and booster leave the carriage and the carriage is braked. A protective shield is provided for shielding the carriage and braking apparatus during firing of the booster, and parts of the launching equipment are reusable.
