<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a code reader capable of appropriately suppressing incorrect recognition of data by a user. <P>SOLUTION: A code reader includes: means for detecting an optical characteristic distribution of an object existing within a reading range; means for detecting a position of an information code based on the optical characteristic distribution; decode means for decoding the information code within the reading range based on the optical characteristic distribution to output the obtained data; storage means for storing a decode condition. The decode means that decodes an information code in a first range within the reading range using a first decode condition, and that decodes an information code in a second range within the reading range using a severer second condition.
