<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To satisfy the need for a technology of limiting increase in the peak value of optical intensity even if the intensity of incident light increases. <P>SOLUTION: A taper waveguide connects an input waveguide and a photodiode. Width of the taper waveguide spreads from the input end connected with the input waveguide toward the output end connected with the photodiode. The spread half angle of the taper waveguide is large enough to excite a higher order mode when signal light is input from the input waveguide. Width of the photodiode is constant or spreads in the direction receding from the output end of the taper waveguide, and the spread half angle is equal to or smaller than that of the taper waveguide. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
