<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set a reading range of a document according to the state of the document reader, in the image reader for reading a document in a reading range. <P>SOLUTION: An image reader 10 is provided with a base frame 51 adjacent to the periphery of a platen glass 52. In advance of reading a document with a reading part 13, the boundary between a base frame 51 and a platen glass 52 is discriminated from the result of reading a range including the base frame 51 and the platen glass 52 by the reading part 13 while no document is placed on the platen glass 52, and a reading range of the document placed on the platen glass 52 is set from the determined boundary.
