<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing element which has small optical absorption loss and has a wide angle tolerance regardless of incidence direction and is superior in heat resistance and light resistance. <P>SOLUTION: The polarizing element includes: polarizers 1 and 2 made of an inorganic substance which have transmission axes in in-plane directions respectively and are disposed in opposition to each other so that the transmission axes cross each other; and a half-wave plate 3 made of an inorganic substance which is provided between the polarizers 1 and 2 and rotates a polarization direction of incident linearly polarized light. Each of the polarizers 1 and 2 has a periodic structure which transmits light having a polarization direction parallel with the transmission axis and reflects light having a polarization direction orthogonal to the transmission axis. When the polarizing element is viewed from the side of the polarizer 1, a slow axis or a fast axis of the half-wave plate 3 is located between the transmission axis of the polarizer 1 and that of the polarizer 2. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
