<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wave plate that corrects influences of rotatory power and reliably functions as a half-wave plate in a wavelength band of a wide range. <P>SOLUTION: The wave plate comprises a material having birefringence and optical rotation and includes first and second wave plates showing a phase difference Γ1=90 and third and fourth wave plates showing a phase difference Γ2=90 with respect to light at a predetermined designed wavelength λ, disposed to allow the respective optical axes to intersect one another. The wave plate is configured in such a manner that: in each wave plate, an angle β formed by the normal line on the major face and the optical axis satisfies A(deg)≤β<90(deg); an orientation angle θ1 of the optical axis of the first and second wave plates and an orientation angle θ2 of the optical axis of the third and fourth wave plates satisfy θ1=22.5(deg)+a and θ2=67.5(deg)-b; and satisfy A=0.0016a<SP POS="POST">5</SP>+0.0166a<SP POS="POST">4</SP>+0.0083a<SP POS="POST">3</SP>+0.0551a<SP POS="POST">2</SP>+0.4575a+13.326 and -4.0(deg)≤a≤4.0(deg). <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT |
