The method involves acquiring a set of digital images (I', II') of a surface, where each image represents a plot of the surface. Needles and orientations of the needles are identified in the image, and connected areas (40, 42) are identified for collecting the needles with same orientation, where each area is a whole or part of a needle colony. The identified areas are determined to represent the same needle colony when the areas satisfy a predetermined criterion of identity, where the criterion is evaluated from a pixel located inside of the areas. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising a set of instructions for detecting needle colonies on a surface of a metal alloy (2) a device for detecting needle colonies on a surface of a metal alloy. |
