In the removal of H2S, SO2, HCN, NOx, HF and similar harmful constituents in gases, alkaline iron dust, pref. from environmental protection plants at steel works, deposited on moist expanded perlite as carrier, is injected into the tubular contact zone for reaction with these constituents. Adsorbent is more effective than the alkali and/or alkaline earth cpds. and provides a use for the iron dust, which previously has to be dumpted. In an example, perlite with a specific gravity of 0.1, granulation =5 mm. and sintering point of 1000 degrees C was mixed with iron dust contg. ca. 49% Fe2O3, 29% CaO, 4% MgO, 4% Na2O, 1% K2O, rest SO2, SiO2, Al2O3 and volatiles.
