<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a groove excavation method to easily install underground pipes. <P>SOLUTION: An excavation step is performed for a whole object area and an excavated ditch 5 over the whole object area is formed. After a guide member setting step is performed for the excavated ditch 5, an earth retaining panel installation step and a guide member slide step are repeatedly performed. Alternatively, the object area is divided into a plurality of segments, and the excavation step is performed for the first segment to form the excavated ditch 5. After the guide member setting step is performed for the excavated ditch 5, the earth retaining panel installation step is performed and also the excavation step is performed for each of the segments thereafter to form the excavated ditch 5.
