PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the presence of a vehicle approaching an own vehicle from both ahead and behind without complicating a structure.SOLUTION: An approaching vehicle detecting device includes: a vehicle detection unit 12 that detects a target vehicle forward of an own vehicle based on an image in which a forward view of the own vehicle is taken; a lost flag setting unit 13 that sets a lost flag that shows the change of the detection state of the target vehicle based on the detection result by the vehicle detection unit; an object detector 14 that detects an object related to the target vehicle in a feature detection area set on the image at least at lower right and left sides; a moving direction determining unit 15 that determines a moving direction of the object based on the image when the object is detected; and a target vehicle state determining unit 16 that determines the presence or absence of the target vehicle approaching the own vehicle based on the lost flag and the presence or absence and moving direction of the target.
