PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electromagnetic wave detection method and an apparatus, capable of achieving highly sensitive detection of electromagnetic waves, such as terahertz light, with a simple configuration.SOLUTION: An electromagnetic wave detection method for detecting electromagnetic waves by means of an EO sampling method that makes use of an electrooptic effect includes the steps of; having sampling light emitted by sampling light emission means enter a non-linear optical crystal; having a target electromagnetic wave emitted by electromagnetic wave emission means enter the non-linear optical crystal at the Cherenkov phase matching angle with respect to an optical axis of the sampling light; and combining the phase-matched electromagnetic wave and the sampling light to generate a sum frequency component or a difference frequency component, either of which is detected by means of a heterodyne detection method or a homodyne detection method. |
