The method involves assigning a spatial prediction mode to a set of pixels of an image (I), and using the assigned spatial prediction mode as a predictor for the spatial prediction mode for another set of pixels of the image. The assigned spatial prediction mode is another spatial prediction mode when the former set of pixels is coded using the former spatial prediction mode. The assigned spatial prediction mode is determined corresponding to a spatial prediction mode previously assigned to a set of neighboring pixels.
