The method involves cooling a gas containing carbon dioxide to a sub-ambient temperature in a heat exchanger (7), and condensing the gas to produce a liquid feed that is separated in a distillation column (17) having a reboiler tank (27). A lighter component gas (22) is withdrawn from the bottom of the column, and a liquid rich in carbon dioxide is vaporized in the heat exchanger. A part of the vaporized liquid (23) is sent to the reboiler tank for vaporizing, and the vaporized part of the liquid is returned to the column and cooled without condensation to form a gas rich in carbon dioxide. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for separating a gas containing carbon dioxide and a component lighter than carbon dioxide by distillation.
