PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a composite material having the capability of trapping a compact molecule; a method for production thereof; and gas adsorbent using the composite material.SOLUTION: A composite material contains a polymer of cyclodextrin in which at least one hydroxy group is replaced with an alkylthio group, and a silica-containing material, on the surface of which the polymer exists. A gas adsorbing agent contains the composite material. The method for production of the composite material includes: a polymerization step of blending an alkaline aqueous solution, cyclodextrin in which at least one hydroxy group is replaced with the alkylthio group, a silica-containing material and an epoxy compound, to polymerize the cyclodextrin with the epoxy compound; and a neutralization step of neutralizing the alkaline aqueous solution after the polymerization step.
