The present invention is a catalyst that is for a solid polymer fuel cell, results from catalyst particles comprising platinum, cobalt, and manganese being supported on a carbon particle carrier, and is characterized by the component ratio (mole ratio) of the platinum, cobalt, and manganese in the catalyst particles being Pt:Co:Mn = 1:0.06-0.39:0.04-0.33, and in the x-ray diffraction analysis of the catalyst particles, the peak strength ratio of Co-Mn alloy appearing in the vicinity of 2theta = 27° being no greater than 0.15 relative to the baseline of a main peak appearing in the vicinity of 2theta = 40°. It is particularly preferable for the catalyst to have a ratio of the CoPt3 alloy peak and MnPt3 alloy peak appearing in the vicinity of 2theta = 32° of at least 0.14 relative to the baseline of the main peak. |
