Disclosed are an access control device using a Zigbee protocol and a wakeup signal and a method thereof. According to one aspect of the embodiment of the present invention, the automatic access control device for an exit includes: a user tag which maintains a standby mode at normal times and if a wakeup signal is received, is converted into an active mode and sends unique identification data for access authorization through Zigbee communication; and an access controller which senses if a human body exists within a certain distance, sends the wakeup signal to the user tag if a human body is detected, performs an access authorization process using the unique identification data received from the user tag, and transmits an opening/closing control signal to the operation device of the exit according to the access authorization result.
