<p>The end few tens of mm of each fibre (1) are enclosed in a rigid sheath (2). To make the termination, each fibre is inserted into a cylindrical cup (6), which is one of several in line in the lower half of a steel mould (15). The bottom of the cup (7) is in the shape of the lens surface. The upper half, which is split (16,17) holds each sheath in a close-fitting boring (10); the shoulder (3) on the sheath butts against the top. A low-m.pt. plastic, poured through runners (20) into cup (6), forms the cylindrical cap (12) and the lens (13) on the end of the fibre. Plastic poured through runners (19) into longitudinal channel (18) forms a web joining all the fibre sheaths in line.</p> |
