<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure pump stabilizing the lift amount of a relief valve and enhancing the durability of a spring. <P>SOLUTION: The first return path 71 is in communication with a fuel rail in a discharge valve outlet side and the second return path 72 is in communication with a compression chamber in the discharge valve inlet side in the relief valve pert 70 of the high pressure pump 10. In a seat or guide member 84, a small diameter part outer wall 84 is pressedly inserted in the inner wall 77a of an inlet hole 77. A valve member 80 sits on a seat surface 81s in which a ball 81 is formed in the seat or guide member 84 (a) when the pressure in the fuel rail is not more than a predetermined relief pressure. The slider 82 of the valve member 80 slides along the slide inner wall 94a in a valve opening direction (b) when the pressure in the fuel rail exceeds the predetermined relief pressure.
