PURPOSE:To manufacture fibrous reduced alkali metallic titanate having superior formability and giving a formed article having superior surface smoothness and polishability by reducing alkali metallic titanate under heating in an atmosphere of gaseous ammonia. CONSTITUTION:Alkali metallic titanate represented by a general formula M2O. nTiO2 (where M is an alkali metal such as Na, K or Li, and n is an integer of 2-12) is heated at about 500-1,000 deg.C in an atmosphere of gaseous ammonia for 20-180min. The alkali metallic titanate is reduced by the heating, and fibrous reduced alkali metallic titanate having >=5mum fiber length and >=20 aspect ratio represented by a formula M2O.nTiO2-x [where M and (n) are said M and (n), and (x) is 1 or 2] is obtd. The reduced alkali metallic titanate has superior formability and can give a formed article having superior surface smoothness and polishability.
