PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat pump water heater operation method and a heat pump water heater suitable for cold districts.SOLUTION: The present invention is characterized in that a heat pump water heater is operated while a refrigerant amount of the heat pump water heater is adjusted so as to fall within a range from 80% to 95% of a standard refrigerant amount of 11.0 kg to 14.5 kg with which a maximum heating capability is achieved at an outdoor temperature of 16°C. The heat pump water heater is operated preferably at not higher than 16°C, more preferably at a temperature from 10°C to -10°C. The heat pump water heater according to the present invention is similarly characterized in that the refrigerant amount of the heat pump water heater is adjusted so as to fall within a range from 80% to 95% of the standard refrigerant amount of 11.0 kg to 14.5 kg with which a maximum heating capability is achieved at an outdoor temperature of 16°C.
