PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter which can be easily assembled and whose manufacturing cost can be reduced.SOLUTION: A starter comprises: an output shaft 4; and a clutch mechanism 5 which transmits rotation force of the output shaft 4 to a pinion mechanism 70. The clutch mechanism 5 comprises: a cylindrical clutch outer 18 with a bottom; a clutch inner 22; a clutch roller 111 and a coil spring 112; one thrust plate 113 which is arranged so as to block an opening 18b of the clutch outer 18, and functions as a retainer of the clutch roller 111 and the coil spring 112, and a retainer of the clutch inner 22 from the clutch outer 18; and a clutch cover 114 which covers the thrust plate 113 and the clutch outer 18 from the outside. When an outside diameter of a pinion inner 71 integrally formed at a diameter-reduced part 22b of the clutch inner 22 is defined as D1, and an outside diameter of the diameter-reduced part 22b is defined as D2, the D1 and D2 are set so as to satisfy D1≤D2. |
