PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a component monitoring system which can accurately measure a position and position changes due to thermal expansion of a dynamoelectric machine component.SOLUTION: Embodiments include a system 100 adapted to detect a target 10 within a machine casing 30. The system includes the target 10 attached to a component 20 within the dynamoelectric machine casing 30, a conduit 40 spanning from an outer surface of the dynamoelectric machine casing 30 to an inner surface of the dynamoelectric machine casing 30, and an optical detection device 70 external to the outer surface of the dynamoelectric machine casing 30 and configured to detect the target 10 attached to the component 20 through the conduit 40.
