PURPOSE:To prevent abnormal increase of the number of revolutions of an engine, by a method wherein an actuator is provided for controlling opening and closing of a throttle valve, and the actuator is controlled so that, when the number of revolutions of an engine is increased to higher than the given high number of revolutions and decreased to lower than the given low number of revolutions, control of constant speed running is stopped. CONSTITUTION:During control of constant speed running, a memory car speed is compared with an actual car speed in an electronic control device CPU, and a throttle valve SV is controlled through a control valve V1 and a bent valve V2 so that a difference therebetween is uniformized. When the number of revolutions exceeds the given high number of revolutions, rotation is decided to be abnormal, and by means of a signal from a number of revolutions of engine detecting means, control of constant speed running is stopped. When the number of revolutions is also below the given low number of revolutions, it is decided that there is possibility to cause disconnection of the number of revolutions of engine detecting means, and control of constant speed running is stopped. This constitution enables prevention of abnormal increase of the number of revolutions of an engine even when the the number of revolutions of engine detecting means is disconnected.
