The present invention relates to an idle stop and go system which economically realizes an idle stop and go (ISG) function of a vehicle mounted with an automatic transmission, and a method to control the same. According to the present invention, the method to control the idle stop and go system includes the steps of: determining whether a restart condition is satisfied or not in an idle stop state; restarting an engine if the restart condition is satisfied; detecting a shift lever which is at a drive gear or a reverse gear; compulsorily recognizing the shift lever as a neutral gear recognized by an inhibitor switch if the shift lever is at the drive gear or the reverse gear; determining whether a neutral gear control end condition is satisfied; and recognizing the current shift gear of the shift lever as the inhibitor switch if the neutral gear control end condition is satisfied.
