PURPOSE:To simplify a winding diameter detecting device by energizing a motor applied with the torque in the opposite direction to the rotating direction of a feed drum at a preset phase angle in conducting a current, detecting the wire speed and the motor load, and calculating the winding diameter in response to the output. CONSTITUTION:A wire 12 such as a steel wire is wound on a feed drum 11, which is connected to a DC motor 16 via a one-way clutch 14 and a transmitting means 15. The motor 16 is applied with the torque in the opposite direction to the rotating direction to feed the wire 12 to the feed drum 11. The wire 12 is pulled by a pulling device 18 via a speed detecting means 17 detecting the speed of the wire 12. This motor is energized at a preset electric angle, the speed of the wire 12 being pulled at this time is detected, and the load of the motor 16 is detected, thereby the winding diameter in response to the speed and load of the wire 12 can be calculated.
