PURPOSE:To detect whether an original is fed or not and to prevent the wear of a friction piece and a separating roll by providing a mobile original reading mechanism and a driving mechanism with a specific means. CONSTITUTION:The mobile original reading mechanism 2 is provided with an original passage opening/closing part and an original separating member engaging/disengaging part, and a controller 15 which controls a driving mechanism is provided with original presence/absence detecting means 56 and 57, and the original separating operation is stopped when the original is absent. When a fixed original reading mechanism 1 is used, the opening/closing part and the engaging/disengaging part close the original passage and original separating members are made unoperated to stop the feed of originals due to the mobile original reading mechanism. When the mobile original reading mechanism 2 is used, the original passage is opened and original separating members are made operated to permit to feed originals to the mobile original reading mechanism 2. Thus, unnecessary wear of original separating members such as the disconnecting roll and the friction piece is prevented.
