NEW MATERIAL:A 1-trifluoromethylcarboline derivative expressed by formula I (R<1> is H or -COOR; R<2> is Cl, Br or I; R is 2-4C alkyl; m is 0-4; n is 0-2; m is <=1 when n is 2). EXAMPLE:6,7-Dibromo-1-trifluoromethyl-beta-carboline. USE:Useful as a plant blight controlling agent capable of controlling downy mildew of tobacco, phytophthora rot of cucumber, blast of rice plant, early blight of potato, etc., by using in upland field, paddy field, orchard, tea field, pasture, etc. PREPARATION:A carboline derivative expressed by formula II is halogenated and/or nitrated to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula I. In the case of halogenation, a halogenating agent, e.g. sodium hypochlorite, etc., is used to carry out the reaction at room temperature - 100 deg.C. In the case of nitration, fuming nitric acid, etc., is used to carry out the reaction at 0-100 deg.C.
