The present invention relates to a method for lightening skin, wherein a Malva neglecta extract is locally applied to a skin part requiring treatment so that skin diseases can be treated. In particular, a skin barrier function is/may be improved. The manifestation of at least one symptom of skin-aging is/may be relieved. Skin is lightened. The local application of a non-polar and/or lipophilic extract of Malva neglecta has turned out to be effective in improving a skin barrier function, relieving the manifestation of at least one symptom of skin-aging, and/or lightening skin. The extract can be applied as a composition further comprising a formulation such as a cosmetic activator for further treating skin diseases.
