The method involves acquiring an image of a pattern by a numerical camera (7). Deterioration is evaluated based on the image of the pattern that is subjected to presence of an obstacle. The deterioration is examined with respect to predetermined typology defining possible types of deterioration of the image of the pattern which allots a zone of localization of the obstacle for each type of deterioration. The type of deterioration affecting the image of the pattern is identified. The obstacle is located in the zone. An independent claim is also included for a system for localization of an obstacle in an opening of motor vehicle.
