<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that is a self-propelled carriage, has excellent assemblability, and obtains a read image having high image quality. <P>SOLUTION: The image reader includes the carriage moving along a platen for placing a document, a carriage support means of supporting the carriage movably, a carriage traveling means of operating the carriage supported by the carriage support means, and an image read sensor for reading a document image obtained by moving the carriage. The carriage support means comprises a guide member for guiding movement of the carriage, and a slider member that is guided by the guide member and moves the carriage. The carriage travel means comprises a carriage drive motor mounted on the carriage, and a carriage traction means of pulling the carriage along the guide member by receiving drive of the carriage drive motor.
