PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing apparatus where it is not necessary to associate a type of a roll body with a diameter of the roll body in advance and the diameter of an optional attached roll body can be obtained, and a method for obtaining the diameter of the roll body in the printing apparatus.SOLUTION: A printing apparatus 1 to which a roll body 3 around which a belt-like recording medium 2 is wound is attached and which performs recording to the recording medium 2 fed from the roll body 3 comprises: roll body rotational amount detection means for detecting a rotational amount of the roll body 3; conveying amount detection means for detecting a conveying amount of the recording medium 2 conveyed as the roll body 3 rotates; and arithmetic means for obtaining a diameter of the roll body 3 on the basis of the rotational amount and the conveying amount.
