PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shift into a short circuit braking period while preventing overvoltage and overcurrent in a wide speed range.SOLUTION: The inverter device includes: an electric motor 109; an inverter circuit 117 which receives the electric power from a DC power supply 144; and control means 118. The inverter device has a short circuit control period after a short-circuit time ratio expansion period to expand the short circuit time ratio for short-circuiting by controlling switching elements 111-116 in an inverter circuit 117. The inverter device achieves a short circuit brake state while preventing problems and failures such as overcurrent and overvoltage with a relatively simple configuration. Thus, a washing machine including the inverter device is obtained.
