摘要 A pigment-based ink comprises: a non-polar carrier fluid; and pigment particles suspended in the non-polar carrier fluid. The pigment particles are coated with a metal oxide that is modified with at least one silane coupling agent to introduce functional groups, steric stabilizers or both. A combination of an electronic display and an electronic ink is provided, as is a method for modifying the pigment particles.

A pigment-based ink comprising a non-polar carrier fluid; and pigment particles suspended in the non-polar carrier fluid, the pigment particles coated with a metal oxide that is reacted with at least one silane coupling agent to covalently bond functional groups, steric stabilizers or both on the metal oxide coating, and wherein the at least one silane coupling agent is a compound of the formula; R—(CH2)n—Si—X3, wherein R is an acidic functional group, —(CH2)n— is a linker group where n is an integer from 1 to 5, and X is a reactive group towards hydroxyl groups on the pigment surface and is selected from the group consisting of alkoxy, hydroxyl, and chlorine, wherein the at least one silane coupling agent is selected from the group consisting of triethoxysilylpropylmaleamic acid (TMA), 3-(trihydroxysilyI)-1-propane sulfonic acid (TSA), 3-trihydroxysilyl-propylmethylphosphonic acid, N-(trimethoxysilylpropyl)ethylenediamine triacetic acid, and the salt forms of the foregoing with Ca or Na as counter ions; and wherein the pigment particles are charged such that they follow connective flow.
