A system for recognizing a vehicle identification number according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises: a three dimensional scanner scanning the vehicle identification number carved on a chassis to acquire an image; a moving unit moving the three dimensional scanner sequentially in the direction that the vehicle identification number is carved; a motion control unit controlling the moving unit; and an image processing unit converting the image, acquired from the three dimensional scanner, into a gray image, discriminating the converted gray image according to a set gray scale to extract characters carved in the chassis, and comparing the extracted characters with predefined standard characters to determine the vehicle identification number. The system for recognizing the vehicle identification number according to an embodiment of the present invention acquires the image of the vehicle identification number carved in the chassis via a three dimensional laser scanner, thereby enhancing recognition rate of the vehicle identification number. |
