<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain a drastic space-saving while assuring a wastewater treatment performance equal to or higher than the conventional sponge carrier activated sludge process. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus comprises a cylindrical reaction tank standing erect to a horizontal surface and at the same time, having an upper end opened and a lower end closed, a net-like member dividing the reaction tank inside into a topside carrier partition and a downside carrier-free partition, and an air diffuser installed on the downside or the upside of the net-like member and diffusing an oxygen-containing gas supplied from the outside into the reaction tank inside. The reaction tank is filled with microorganisms such as activated sludge and a plurality of porous carriers, and at the same time, the wastewater to be treated is introduced from the upper end.
