<p>The invention relates to a method for the trimming of, in particular, hot-rolled metal strips (1) by means of a trimming shear (2). At a predetermined distance ahead of the trimming shear, irregularities in both strip-edge regions are continuously detected. These parameters are used to calculate the width of the edge strip remaining at both edges of the strip and its respective position in relation to the width of the finished strip. In addition, the distance travelled or to be travelled from the detected irregularities to the trimming shear (2) is determined. If the width of the edge strip falls below a minimum value, the cutting heads (3) of the trimming shear (2) are moved by real-time control or regulation at a speed of travel matched to the speed of the strip, to a cutting width which prevents the running out of one or both edge strips.
