The method involves selecting a driving maneuver from multiple driving maneuvers such as distance control, adaptive cruise control, change of distance to a preset target object and/or change of the target object. The selected driving maneuver is activated by an automated or manual engagement until the selected driving maneuver is completed or discontinued. A target parameter is determined depending on the driving maneuver, and is considered at time of activation and execution of the driving maneuver. An independent claim is also included for a driver assistance system for detecting driving condition and motion parameter of a motor vehicle.
