LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY DEVICE

PURPOSE:To maintain a high display grade by relieving the local degradation in contrast and coloration dependent on a temp. change and visual angle bearing. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal display device is arranged with a liquid crystal cell 1 which has a chiral nematic liquid crystal layer consisting of liquid crystal molecules having >=180 deg. helix angle, a light transmission plate 4 which is laminated on this liquid crystal cell 1 and a light source 5 which is arranged along this liquid crystal cell 1 and illuminates the light transmission plate 4. The stretching axis of a light transmission plate 3 is arranged approximately parallel with the side of the liquid crystal cell 1 and further, the linear light source 5 is arranged along the side of the liquid crystal cell 1 approximately parallel with the orientation axis. The retardation DELTAn.d of the phase plate 3 is so set as to be made smaller in the upper part of the display than in the lower part of the display.
