In a water heater with a catalytic split burner (4) between a hollow body (5) and a water shell (6) of the water chamber (1), the hollow body (5) forms the combustion chamber of a preheating device. The latter comprises a premix burner (7) arranged in the hollow body (5). After preheating, it is possible, in the case of lower output requirements, to operate the split burner (4) alone or, in the case of increased demand, to operate the premix burner (7) in addition. <IMAGE>
