<p>A portable visual temperature indicating device, adapted for use in refrigerators and freezers for foodstuffs, comprises a transparent housing 2 enclosing an elongate bulb thermometer 6. The bulb 8 of the thermometer is encased in a food simulant wax 10. The portion of the thermometer displaying temperature projects from the wax, and the housing is filled with a gas, which may be air. Preferably, not more than 10% of the length of the thermometer is encased in the food simulant material. The transparent housing may be cylindrical with the food simulant wax at one end of the housing and the thermometer extending coaxially within the housing. In use, because the food simulant wax has a relatively high heat capacity, comparable with that of food items stored in a refrigerator, the temperature indicating device is designed to react to changes in temperature in the same way as the food items, such that the displayed temperature corresponds more closely to that of the food items rather than the surrounding air.</p> |
