This invention relates to the use of certain amine promoters in processes for surface-treating colloidal silica nanoparticles with selected aromatic aminosilanes, aromatic aminoalkylsilanes, and secondary and tertiary aliphatic aminosilanes. This process provides surface-modified nanoparticle colloidal silica without causing the silica nanoparticles to gel, agglomerate, or aggregate. |

1. A process comprising forming a reaction mixture comprising:
a) a dispersion of colloidal silica nanoparticles in a non-aqueous organic solvent, the nanoparticles having an average diameter of less than 75 nm; b) a silane of Formula 1: wherein A is selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups, alkenyl groups, arylalkyl groups, alkoxyalkyl groups, alkoxyaryl groups, fluorine-substituted alkyl groups, aryl groups and N-aryl-substituted aminoalkyl groups; R3 is a C1-C10 alkoxy group; and R4 and R5 are independently selected from the group consisting of C1-C10 alkyl and C1-C10 alkoxy groups; and c) an amine promoter having a pKb less than about 7.0. |
