PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a long period stacking structure magnesium alloy which does not use Y (yttrium) but uses Gd (gadolinium) and whose production cost can be reduced, and to provide a production method of the long period stacking structure magnesium alloy.SOLUTION: The long period stacking structure magnesium alloy of the present invention is a Mg-Zn-RE-based magnesium alloy having long period stacking structure and containing 0.2 atom% to 3.0 atom% of zinc (hereafter "Zn") based on the whole, 0.4 atom% to 6.0 atom% of rare earth metal (hereafter "RE") that is at least one of gadolinium (hereafter "Gd") and terbium (Tb), based on the whole, and the balance magnesium (hereafter "Mg") with inevitable impurities. The long period stacking structure magnesium alloy is produced by the following steps: a melting step of melting Mg, Zn and RE to produce a molten metal; a cooling step of cooling the molten metal under a predetermined condition; and a solidifying step of solidifying the molten metal after the cooling step, the predetermined condition is based on at least one of temperature change, cooling time, cooling speed and cooling method. |
