PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an encoder and a rotor drive system that are capable of avoiding unintended ways of use.SOLUTION: An encoder 200 for detecting an angular position of a rotor on the basis of an output signal from a magnetic sensor that changes with rotation of the rotor includes: a communication unit 210 for transmitting data according to a transmission request from an upper-level device 300; and a storage unit 220 for storing modulation instruction information giving instruction on a scheme to modulate transmission data. The communication unit 210 transmits transmission data obtained by modulation according to the modulation instruction information read out from the storage unit 220 when receiving the transmission request. |
