The present invention relates to a method to control an internal combustion engine (1) having one or more cylinders (2). Each cylinder (2) can be deactivated according to a predeterminable pattern depending on the required power output, wherein the pattern includes a time sequence of commands for ignition and commands for skipping ignition. The pattern is derived with a calculation specification in such a way that the spacing between the cylinders (2) intended for skipping in relation to the firing order is an odd number and preferably in coprime relationship with the number of cylinders. Thus, the present invention enables the uniform distribution of a thermal load to the cylinders.
