The present invention relates to a method for authenticating a packet in a controller area network (CAN), and more specifically, to an efficient authentication method using division and mixture message authentication codes and a device thereof. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the method, which is used to transmit a message in a CAN by using a mixture message authentication code (MAC), includes the steps of: generating a first MAC by using a first message; dividing the first MAC into a first partial MAC and a second partial MAC; generating a second MAC by using a second message; dividing the second MAC into a third partial MAC and a fourth partial MAC; generating a first authentication MAC by using a linear operation of the second partial MAC and the third partial MAC; transmitting the first message with the first partial MAC; and transmitting the second message with the first authentication MAC.
