A method and an apparatus for providing backward compatibility for hybrid broadcast are disclosed. A terminal receives a broadcast stream via a broadcast channel; extracts an application information table (AIT) from the broadcast stream; extracts application program address information from the AIT and executes the application program using the address information if the terminal has the same version as or a higher version than the application program provided by the AIT; and extracts address information of a lower version application program from the AIT and executes the lower version application program using the address information if the terminal has a lower version than the application program provided by the AIT.
