The invention relates to a device (1) for actuating and/or monitoring a brushless direct current motor (3), preferably for safety-relevant applications, preferably while operating or controlling a vehicle or components of a vehicle. The invention also relates to a method for reliably checking the functional capability of such a device (1). A device (1) which can be actuated by a motor control unit (5) by means of a control signal (4) and has the purpose of actuating and/or monitoring a brushless direct current motor (3) by means of an inverter circuit (2) comprises – a deactivation device (7), – a driver circuit (1.1) which acts on the inverter circuit (2) and – a testable diagnostic unit (6) for monitoring the device (1) and/or the inverter circuit (2) and/or the brushless direct current motor (3), wherein the deactivation device (7) acts on the driver circuit (1.1). The testable diagnostic unit (6) can be tested for a malfunction by means of a testing command which is transmitted by the motor control unit (5).
