<p>A steering column assembly (100) comprises a telescopic shroud (1) having an upper shroud portion (1) and a lower shroud portion (2), a support bracket (7) having at least one arm (10) which extends down from the bracket (7) on one side of the lower shroud portion (2), a clamp mechanism (200) which comprises a clamp pin (14) that passes through an opening in the arm (10) and an opening in the lower shroud portion (2) or an opening in a rail secured to the lower shroud portion (2), the clamp mechanism (200) further comprising a primary cam mechanism (18) which is operable by a lever (19), whereby the clamp mechanism (200) is arranged so that when in the clamped condition the at least one arm (10) is clamped to the lower shroud portion (2) or rail and the lower shroud portion (2) is squeezed onto the upper shroud portion (1) to fix the upper shroud portion (1) relative to the lower shroud portion (2). The assembly further comprises a release mechanism such as a cam mechanism which is operable to partially reduce the force with which the outer shroud (1) portion is squeezed onto the inner shroud (1) portion in the event of a crash.</p> |
