A liquid crystal alignment agent, comprising: a polymer (A); and a solvent (B), wherein the polymer (A) is obtained by reacting a mixture, and the mixture comprises a tetracarboxylic dianhydride component (a) and a diamine component (b), the diamine component (b) comprises a diamine compound (b-1) represented by formula (1) and a diamine compound (b-2) represented by formula (2), in formula (1), Y1 represents a C1 to C12 alkylene group; Y2 represents a group having a steroid skeleton or a group represented by formula (1-1), in formula (1-1), R1 each independently represents a fluorine atom or a methyl group; R2 represents a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, a C1 to C12 alkyl group, a C1 to C12 fluoroalkyl group, a C1 to C12 alkoxy group, —OCH2F, —OCHF2, or —OCF3; Z1, Z2, and Z3 each independently represent a single bond, a C1 to C3 alkylene group, Z4 each independently represents  Ra and Rb each independently represent a fluorine atom or a methyl group, and h and i each independently represent 0, 1, or 2; a represents 0, 1, or 2; b, c, and d each independently represent an integer of 0 to 4; e, f, and g each independently represent an integer of 0 to 3, and e+f+g≧1; in formula (2), Y3 each independently represents Y4 each independently represents a single bond, a C1 to C20 divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group, a divalent alicyclic hydrocarbon group, or a divalent aromatic hydrocarbon group; Y5 each independently represents a single bond,  or —O(CH2)m—, wherein m represents an integer of 1 to 5; Y6 each independently represents a nitrogen-containing aromatic heterocyclic group; and j represents an integer of 1 to 4.
